A great stop for a dose of local and national history. The grounds are very well kept and everything is in walking distance. There are a few places to sit and take in the scenery and honor this place holds.
The staff are so very kind and knowledgeable and willing to share lots of history or let you read on your own if you prefer.
Great spot to see and learn about some of the history of the Marines!!
Free entry and great museum and video! Did not know this statue was here before the one in D.C. the artist built this here, and it was disassembled and sent to Washington to cast the bronze one that is there now. Worth the visit to teach yourself and your family a lesson in what true sacrifice looks like. Thanks to all our veterans for your service!!!
The history of WWII up close & within touch. The 32 minute documentary of Iwo Jima keeps you mesmerized and helps you realize the importance of this battle in the south pacific. The actual statue is majestic & beautiful and makes you feel how important our flag is to our freedom. God Bless and Enjoy this little nook of history in Harlingen Tx.
Amazing!!! A must visit when in the area. Not only do you see the original casting of the flag raising, but the historic museum. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and are willing to talk with you about the history. Gift shop available.
Plaster replica of the original. Nice park with good explanation material situated around. Gift shop is closed on Sunday. Talks about all of the sacrifices of the Marines over time and especially at Iwo Jima. Much historic value in understanding the significance of this island of rock as it was actually the first part of Japan- Tokyo prefecture- that the US attempted to take. The famous photo of the flag raising was actually the second raising, primarily for photo ops. 3 of the 6 men died before the fighting was over.
This place is awesome small but well worth visiting you take a look back in time with lots of photos articles the weapons used and much more it's free and open to the public best of all is the amazing statue just outside take a stroll and enjoy the view USA ππ€πΊπΈπΊπΈπΊπΈ β¦
This "little" museum isn't as little as you think it is. It would take someone at least a full week to see everything that this place holds. I visited 1 time and will return a few more times to see the rest. There is also a little movie theater inside that shows a 30 minute movie of Iwo Jima in WWII. If you're a history buff, then this is the place to get your WWII fix. I appreciate the older gentleman working there because he cares truly about keeping and preserving the memories of this dreadful war. The last of the soldiers are dying out but their memories won't be forgotten. God Bless this place and the people who work here to keep the story alive.
Enjoyed the content just wish they had a better building to show there wonderful displays. And thank you to the wonderful volunteers, enjoyed the content and gift store.
